CHAPTER TWELVE
Irulan
Irulan took the paintbrush roller and slid it down the wall. She was in Mason’s mom’s bedroom. For weeks, Miss Jeanine had been talking about wanting to do different projects around her house. She wanted new paint on her walls, new carpet, and a boatload of new appliances. Mason wasn’t feeling her going out and spending tons of money with people she didn’t know, so he agreed to do most of the work. Everyone decided to help out. Leslie and Whitney were painting one of the other bedrooms, while Mason and Jamal pulled up the downstairs carpet.
While painting, Irulan admired the photo that sat on Miss Jeanine’s dresser. It was a picture of Irulan and Mason while at the sweetheart dance. They were in high school at the time. Irulan walked over and lifted the frame. She admired the smiles on their faces. That night Irulan was supposed to go with Lenny Graves, but he stood her up and went with Tiffany Harding instead. Rumor was that she was giving it up and since Irulan wasn’t, it seemed to be an easy switch for Lenny. Irulan wasn’t tripping about it, but Mason was determined not to let her go to the dance alone, so he agreed to take her. Leslie and Jamal had dates of their own, but they all hung out together. Miss Jeanine rented them a limousine and allowed them to make a night of it, which was exactly what they did.
Miss Jeanine entered the room, holding two glasses of lemonade. “That’s one of my favorite pictures of you two,” she said handing Irulan a glass. Irulan took note of the way her face lit up. Miss Jeanine was a slender woman, with cinnamon skin and slanted eyes that Irulan was sure she passed down to Mason. She had a bright sense of humor and had absolutely no problem expressing how she felt, which Irulan loved.
“Yeah it’s one of my favorites too,” she replied.
“You know, I actually thought you guys were going to start dating after that.”
Tickled, Irulan shook her head. She sat the picture back down and walked over to the bucket of paint. “What would make you think that?” she questioned while taking a sip from her glass.
Miss Jeanine shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know. You two just look like a good fit. Even back then.”
“Mm,” Irulan nodded her head. “We were just kids. We didn’t know what we wanted back then.”
“And what about now?” she asked with a little grin.
“Aye. What you ladies in here chit chatting about?” Leslie said walking into the room. Whitney followed behind her.
Laughing, Irulan tugged at Leslie’s blue jean overalls. She had paint all over them. “Has any paint made it on the wall?”
“Don’t judge me,” she said while looking down at her clothes. “I like to have fun when I’m doing work like this.”
“Mm. Is that why we hear all of that damn noise in the other room?” Miss Jeanine questioned on her way to the door.
“Don’t act like that Mama J.
